Make a Website

First Off- Everyone be good for Mrs. Carver.
Secondly- I have an assignment for you guys to complete.

Before you do anything- MAKE SURE YOUR VACATION PROJECT IS FINISHED AND IN YOUR DRIVE.

Finish the assignment below. It shouldn't take you the entire class period. Make sure to put your HTML document in drive so I know you did it.

Once you are finished, you can either study for exams, or race your friends on Nitro Type.

Today's Assignment-

Make an HTML webpage with Editey in Google Drive. I want you to make the content realistic about something you are passionate about (dirt bikes, Volleyball, Fashion, MLB, etc. )

Your webpage must have the following features/ tags:

<DOCTYPE html>
<html> </html>
<body> </body>
Several descriptive paragraphs of font <p> </p>
A list (<ul></ul>) with at least 3 list items (<li></li>)
At least three images <img src="www.google.com">
A hyperlink to go to another website <a href="www.google.com"> Click here to search </a>

See my example code below for help. You will notice, I included a picture as my clickable link. To do that I put my img in my anchor. You don't have to do that, but it's a nice touch. Here's how:

<a href="www.google.com"> <img src="http://i.imgur.com/FPFNU26.png"></a>

Helpful tip: Remember- <img> tags are self closing. There is no closing image tag.
It should look like this:
<img src="#">

NOT THIS <img src="#"> </img>

Vacation Project

Today we will begin a project encompassing many elements of what we have learned thus far.
Imagine it's your senior year. As a gift to you for your academic excellence, your parents wish to reward you with a dream vacation. You can choose where you want to go. You can choose what you want to do.

Your trip will be from 3-10 days. The realistic part of this assignment, however, is that everything has a cost. You will calculate an exact itinerary of everything you will spend on the trip based on real life quotes from travel, hotel, restaurant, and rental car websites.

Your Budget will be written out in excel, Flyer in word, and your destination and activities will be displayed via a picture collage in PowerPoint.
Your publisher flyer should include the overall budget of your trip, destination, and your names.
The PowerPoint aspect of the trip is what we will work on today.

You need a 8-10 slide presentation showing where you are going and what you are doing. Your presentation should include picture of activities, scenery, nature, culture, and unique/special locations.

Battleship Excel

Battleship

1.           Open Microsoft Excel.
2.          Change your page orientation to Landscape.
3.          Change your margins to .25.
4.          Make sure that your page fits 1 page wide by 1 page long.
5.          Select Columns A to j. Change the column width to 3.
6.          Highlight cells A1 to J10. Change the color to a shade of blue for the ocean.                  This is your playing grid.  It is very helpful to use boarders on your gridlines.                 Hide columns K-Y (highlight, right-click, hide).
7.          Now create another board next to the last one in cells AA to AJ.  This is to be                used as your opponent’s playing grid.
8.          Click View/Zoom. Zoom to 100%.
9.          Use WordArt to enter the name Battleship below your playing grid.
10.        Use WordArt to enter your name vs. your opponent’s name (for example, Leslie             vs. Lance) below Battleship.
11.         Now, place your ships on your grid. You have the following ships:
a.           Carrier – 5 cells
b.          Battleship – 4 cells
c.          Cruiser – 3 cells
d.          Submarine – 3 cells
e.          Destroyer- 2 cells
12.        To place your ships, select the correct number of cells and then color them a color of your choice (not black or red, though). Remember, your cells can only go across or down.
13.        Now, choose someone to go first. Whomever goes first chooses coordinates (i.e. B12). If B12 is a miss, the person that went should change the cell color to black. If it is a hit, change it to red.
14. Continue playing the game until you sink all the ships.
15. Once you’ve finished the game, use WordArt to place the name of the winner across the playing grids.
16. Save your board as yournameBattleship and turn in to
your drive.

Six Words You Need to Hear today

http://rachelheldevans.com/blog/six-words-you-need-to-hear-today

I apologize to Mrs Evans for copy and pasting this article. Due to the web restrictions at our school this is the only way my classes could read this content.

Six Words You Should Hear Today

'my sweet freedom' photo (c) 2009, Victor Bezrukov - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/
“I love to watch you play.'"
According to Rachel Macy Stafford, an author and special education teacher, those six words changed the way she related to her children.  Rather than praising or critiquing their performances at swim meets, recitals, and soccer games, she began pulling her children close, and simply whispering, “I love to watch you swim,” “I love to hear you sing,” “I love to hear your read,” “I love to watch you play.”
Their reaction to these words, she said, was telling:
My child's face broke into her most glorious smile -- the one that causes her eyes to scrunch up and become little slices of joy. And then she did something I didn't expect. She threw herself against me, wrapped her arms tightly around my neck, and whispered, ‘Thank you, Mama.’ And in doing so, I swear I could read her mind: The pressure's off. She loves to hear me play; that is all.
"The pressure’s off. She loves to hear me play; that is all."
Even as someone who is not yet a mother, I see the wisdom of this approach. And as my eyes scanned the article, I thought of how desperately we adults need to hear these words too, perhaps most especially from the God who identifies as our Father and who is often compared to a Mother.
What a relief it would be to know the pressure’s off. God delights in our living and breathing and working and praying and that delight is not something we have to earn by doing everything right.
God just loves to watch us play.
Too many corners of the Church have been infected with a legalistic, performance-based view of God in which God stands over our lives with crossed arms and a disappointed scowl, applauding only when we get everything just right and rendering judgment on everything we do wrong.  Some pastors seem to thrive in lording this disapproving God over their parishioners. As one pastor put it: “Some of you, God hates you. Some of you, God is sick of you. God is frustrated with you. God is wearied by you. God has suffered long enough with you. He doesn’t think you’re cute. He doesn’t think it’s funny.”  He then proceeds to explain how to win back God's favor.
For too many Christians, God’s unmerited favor is a one-time gift that applies exclusively to eternal security. In the meantime, God’s favor has to be earned.  It has to be fought for with one flawless performance after another. The Family of God is a competitive, disciplined, performance-based family that runs on the economy of gold stars, rules and shame. God is rendered into the  classic nightmare sports parent  whose favor has to be earned, who is always, always, always disappointed in us.
But this is not the God we encounter in Scripture or in Christ or in the Eucharist.  The God we encounter there is the God in whom we live and move and have our being, the God who rejoices over His children with signing, the God who spreads Her wings over Her children like an eagle over her chicks, the God who loved the world enough to experience all of its pain alongside of us, the God who—as Nadia Bolz-Weber puts it—“would rather die than be in the sin accounting business anymore,” the God who loves to watch us play.
God doesn’t love us because we’ve earn it.  God loves us because we are God’s children. God created this world and everything in it—don’t you think God delights in it? Don’t you think God loves us at least as much as a good parent who delights in the activities of her children, regardless of whether they get everything right?
This isn’t a performance-based relationship; it’s a relationship based on unconditional love and endless delight. We can breathe a deep and long sigh of relief because the pressure’s off. We’re not here to impress or perform; we’re here to revel in God’s delight.
So hear these six words from God today:
I love to watch you play.
Or perhaps:
I love to watch you write.
I love to watch you bake.
I love to watch you nurse.
I love to watch you read to your kids at night.
I love to watch you care for the sick.
I love to watch you take pictures.
I love to watch you study.
I love to watch you laugh.
I love to watch you seek the truth even when it’s hard.
I love to watch you be the church together, even when it’s imperfect.
I love to watch you love one another, even when it seems impossible.
I love to watch you eat and drink and dance and explore and worship and pray and get out of your car to move that poor little turtle out of the road…not because you do any of these things perfectly, but because you do them as my children.
Now sink into that sigh of relief and believe this today:

The pressure's off. God loves to watch me play. That is all.

A.2                                                                                                                                                        The public probably learned there’s something called Spotify, and that it’s not Pandora. What it has highlighted for us is we need to do a better job explaining to artists how streaming benefits them. The point that’s been lost is that Spotify’s the fastest-growing revenue source the industry has. There are many artists to whom, through the labels, we’re paying out millions a year already. Those check sizes will just keep increasing. I’m certain that if we can get the billion-people-plus that are consuming music online and move them into a model like Spotify, the industry would be considerably bigger than it is today.                                                      http://www.billboard.com/articles/events/year-in-music-2014/6406334/spotify-daniel-ek-year-end-2014

Connected but Alone: Turkle at TED

***Please forgive me. This morning in class I thought it was Wednesday so I may have said this was due "tonight." This assignment is not due until Wednesday at Midnight. Sorry for the confusion.
 Mr Hodges 2-10-15 4:09 PM****

Everyone born under Adam hears whispers of lies in his soul. The lies say we are flawed, unforgivable, and unworthy of love. The Accuser has us in a courtroom. He presents every relationship and life experience as evidence that his lies are true. Authentic, life giving relationships with the Father, Son, and Spirit, and our neighbors are our defense. They testify Truth: We belong, we are loved, our Father is love, and his judgement is forgiveness.

Turkle may or may not identify as a Christian, but she has certainly identified a key aspect of the human experience. In this age of unprecedented connectivity, are we experiencing authentic relationships? Are we connected but alone?

I would like you to write a response to the Turkle's TED talk. If you have forgotten some details there is a transcription link at the bottom. I am looking for self-reflection- for you to be vulnerable with yourself and examine your pain, fear, and coping devices.

I will not ask your classmates to read this blog. If you would like greater privacy, you may submit your response in a private Google doc. I do not think you could sufficiently engage with this assignment and respond with less than 250-300 words. You do not have to agree with Turkle's conclusions. If you critique her presentation, provide personal evidence to back it up. Feel free to take liberties with the questions if contemplation guides you down a different path. They serve as a guide.

"We use conversations with each other, to learn how to think about ourselves. When we lose our capacity for conversation, we lose our capacity for self reflection."
Can you remember a time in your life where you felt particularly aware of your inner world?
Did it feel pleasant or painful? Was it a mix of both?
On a scale of 1- 10 how would you rank your awareness of your inner world?
Can you think of a recent experience where you used a phone or device to escape grief, anxiety, etc?
How did that work out for you?

"[Our devices] don't only change what we do, they change who we are."
"We expect more technology and less from each other."
Do You agree?
Do your "sips" of online communication add up to one big "gulp" of communication?
How can texting, tweeting, etc. be used to gain intimacy in a relationship? What are the limitations?

Turkle stated that we are allured by three lies-
1.) We can put our attention wherever we want it to be.
2.) We will always be heard.
3.) We will never have to be alone.
Which of these lies can you here whispering in your soul?
How will believing that lie be destructive to your well being?

". . .  the moment that people are alone, even for a few seconds, they become anxious, they panic, they fidget, they reach for a device. Just think of people at a checkout line or at a red light. Being alone feels like a problem that needs to be solved. And so people try to solve it by connecting."
Does this sound familiar?
What are we running from?
Why are we so uncomfortable with ourselves?

Do you have a "sacred space" where it is safe to be alone?
Are you comfortable with the idea, is does it sound too intimidating?
What can we do to silence the fear?
What has Christ done to silence our fear?
What can we do to help others with this issue?

"For God was in Christreconciling the world to himself, not counting people's sins against them."
-2 Corinthians 5:19

Do you (like me) struggle with seeing God as abstract, distant, and removed?

How do you see the rhythm of God moving in your life?

What does it mean for you to live in tune with the song?

How have you heard "the song" playing in your life recently?

What is it that speaks to you about the character and nature of God? Where do you see it?
Examples could be a mother nursing her newborn child, a family gathering for a celebration, the lyrics of a popular artist, a particular piece of art work, etc....

May you come to see that the song is written on your heart and realize you are in relationship with the living God!

2.) Write a paragraph describing why your parent should buy you this product. Describe how the product will enhance your education, daily life, social experience, etc.

4.) Your partner must write a one paragraph response within the shared document stating why or why not they should buy it for you. Your partner will be writing from the position of your parent.

Just to clarify.

Getting to Know You Blog Post

I want to better get to know you. I'm only looking for a 2-5 minute introduction. I would like you to type it out and as if you were going to read it to the class ( we may or may not do this). If your Blog still isn't working (invalid error) save your work in a google doc and place it in your shard folder. I'd like to get a sense of who you are and what your voice is.  What injustices motivate you to action? What is the fight God has designed you to be in? What are you passionate about? How are you gifted compared to the rest of your peers. Not sure what to write? No problem ... here are some ideas to help get you started:
  • What are you passionate about?
  • What are some of your goals for the year? For your life?
  • What is the most important physical object in your life? (take a photo of it and bring it to class)
  • What is your greatest fear?
  • When have you been embarrassed?
  • When have you worked on a project and completely lost track of time?
  • What is your favorite flavor of Jello?
  • How do you remain upbeat while reading the news?
  • When have you witnessed injustice?
  • Why can't cows walk backwards down stairs?
  • What has been occupying your mind most recently?
  • If the plural of ox is oxen shouldn't the plural of paradox be paradoxen?
